For two days, the case of Jennifer Fisher had the people of Florida scratching their heads. There was a missing car in a canal, a woman gone without a trace, and little explanation for what had happened. On Thursday morning, the mystery took a surprising turn when the 53-year-old Jacksonville woman was discovered alive — without her clothes — in a ditch just a short walk from where her vehicle had been found.

Fisher’s 2018 Acura MDX was first spotted partially submerged near Indrio Road and Johnston Road in St. Lucie County on Tuesday, Sept. 30. When deputies arrived, they found the SUV but not its driver. With no sign of her, the sheriff’s office put out a missing person alert, noting that a teal e-bike attached to the back of the car was also unaccounted for. That detail suggested she may have left the scene on the bike.

Two days later, at about 5:30 a.m., the sheriff’s office fielded a string of 911 calls from residents who reported seeing a woman lying in a ditch along Johnston Road. Deputies arrived to find Fisher alive, her only complaint being irritation from fire ant bites. Authorities quickly confirmed her identity.

At first, Fisher offered little explanation. According to the sheriff’s office, she “was not forthcoming” but eventually admitted that she had crashed her SUV, removed her clothing, and walked into the woods intending to stay there for several days. She clarified that she had not taken the e-bike with her.

Why Fisher chose to leave her car in the canal and hide in the woods remains unclear. Investigators said she had planned to stay at an Airbnb for two nights but did not provide details on its location. After her discovery, she was transported to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center for a medical evaluation.

The facts remain unusual — a car in a canal, a vanished driver, a reappearance in a ditch without clothes. Yet the resolution brought relief to family, neighbors, and law enforcement who feared the worst. What began as a grim story about a missing woman now reads more like a tale of survival and confusion, with plenty of questions still unanswered.

The investigation into what led Fisher to leave her car, remove her clothes, and disappear into the woods is ongoing. For now, though, the case that had rattled St. Lucie County has ended with the simplest kind of good news: Jennifer Fisher is alive.
