Mug shot of British convicted sex offender and former socialite Ghislaine Maxwell, taken at the Metropolitan Detention Center, Brooklyn

The U.S. Supreme Court is weighing whether to hear an appeal from Ghislaine Maxwell, the longtime associate of Jeffrey Epstein who is serving a 20-year prison sentence for her role in his sex trafficking scheme. Justices met in private this week to consider her petition, a move that has reignited public attention around the Epstein case and the powerful people once in his orbit.

The appeal lands at a moment when Epstein’s legacy is again under the spotlight. Last week, Democrats on the House Oversight Committee released a tranche of documents from Epstein’s estate that referenced a handful of high-profile names. Among them were billionaire Elon Musk, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, venture capitalist Peter Thiel, and former Trump adviser Steve Bannon. None of the records provide evidence of criminal activity, but their release underscored how wide Epstein’s reach was before his death in federal custody. Musk quickly dismissed one entry mentioning his name as “false.”

The Flight Logs Could Hamper Her Appeal

One of Joe Holt’s old flight logs showing his flight of U.S. Sen. Bill Bradley.

Flight logs released alongside the documents also placed former President Bill Clinton on a 2000 trip with Maxwell, Epstein, and several Secret Service agents. Republicans on the committee accused Democrats of selectively withholding other materials, suggesting partisan motives in how the records are being rolled out. Survivors of Epstein’s abuse have repeatedly said that what matters most is full transparency.

Survivors Want Maxwell To Stay Where She Is

Lisa Phillips, who has spoken publicly about surviving Epstein’s abuse, said she wasn’t surprised by the latest names. “We’ve been compiling our own list for years,” she said. “What matters is that the truth comes out, no matter who it touches.” Her attorney, James March, echoed that point, urging Congress to pass new legislation that would force the release of all Epstein-related records. “Politics aside, accountability requires sunlight,” he said.

Maxwell’s Odds Are Slim

Elie Honig, a former federal prosecutor, wrote that while her odds are better than most petitioners, they are still slim. The Court has a packed docket for its upcoming term, including appeals involving former President Trump, and may have little appetite for another politically charged case. As the Court deliberates, pressure is building on Congress to act. A bipartisan petition in the House has reached the threshold to force a floor vote on releasing all Epstein files.
