The federal indictment of former FBI Director James Comey was always going to be explosive. But the spotlight has quickly shifted from Comey himself to the person bringing the charges: Lindsey Halligan, the newly appointed U.S. attorney for Virginia. At 36, Halligan has never prosecuted a single case. Until last week, she was best known as a Palm Beach insurance lawyer with a background in modeling and beauty pageants. Now, she holds one of the most politically charged cases in recent American history.
The Legal World is Raising a Collective Eyebrow

Judge James Nutt reads a document in his courtroom at the Palm Beach County Courthouse in downtown West Palm Beach, Fla., on September 15, 2025.
Halligan’s rapid rise has raised eyebrows across the legal world. She was appointed Monday, and by Friday she had delivered what President Donald Trump has openly desired for years: a criminal indictment of the man who once refused to bend the FBI to his will. Critics say the move looks less like the impartial work of the justice system and more like the fulfillment of a vendetta. “This is a mad king picking off each of his political enemies,” one legal analyst said.
Trump Insists This Isn’t About Revenge

Trump, meanwhile, brushed off any suggestion that the indictment is about revenge. Speaking to reporters on his way to a golf tournament, he insisted it was about “justice.” “They are sick radical left people and they can’t get away with it,” he said, casting Comey as part of a broader conspiracy against him. Halligan’s appointment is already drawing skepticism. She has no record as a prosecutor, no trial experience, and no history of managing a high-profile case. She was a high school athlete, Miss Colorado USA contestant, a model in Miami to pay law school bills, and eventually, an insurance attorney. She met Trump at his Palm Beach golf club, joined his legal team, and later moved into the White House as a special assistant.
It’s Likely Comey Will Get The Case Dismissed

Her trajectory fuels the perception that she was chosen less for her qualifications and more for her loyalty. “Every time the president opens his mouth and talks about retribution, he strengthens Comey’s chances of getting the case dismissed as malicious,” one defense lawyer told NBC. Comey himself seems to sense the political overtones. He’s maintained his innocence, telling reporters: “I’m innocent. So, let’s have a trial and keep the faith.” But behind the scenes, his team is reportedly preparing to argue that the case is tainted by personal animus, especially given Trump’s long history of public attacks on the former FBI director.
The Stakes Could Not Be Higher For Halligan

The stakes are enormous. If Halligan can secure a conviction, she’ll be the newcomer who delivered Trump one of his most sought-after victories. If the case falls apart, she risks being remembered as an inexperienced lawyer thrown into a legal and political firestorm she couldn’t control.
