Long before she was Erika Kirk, she was Erika Frantzve — a basketball-loving tomboy who surprised even herself by stepping onto the pageant stage. A throwback to her 2012 “Road to the Crown” video for Miss Arizona USA shows a young woman straddling two worlds: sneakers and mascara, basketball courts and ball gowns.

Erika laughs as she recalls her early days — a little girl dribbling a basketball since age five, rocking Jordans, and rocking a short “Bam-Bam” haircut because her long hair was just too much to manage. So much so that strangers at the grocery store often mistook her for a boy. “I was just a baller,” she said, proudly embracing her tomboy phase.

But behind the baggy jerseys and athletic clothes was a hidden girly girl waiting to bloom. College basketball at Regis University sharpened her discipline, but when she discovered the fun of curling her hair and swiping on mascara, another side of Erika emerged. The pageant world became her stage to show that toughness and femininity can coexist.

Looking back, it’s clear she treasured her journey. She credited her family’s support and even poked fun at her “late-blooming” transformation, joking that genetics gave her a boost once she let her inner glam shine.

The 2012 video captures a young woman brimming with energy, gratitude, and self-discovery. More than just a pageant prep clip, it’s a reminder that identity is layered — that the tomboy who once ruled the basketball court could grow into the confident woman ready to don the Miss Arizona USA crown.

It’s a fun, nostalgic peek at Erika’s path — a mix of grit, grace, and a little glam — proving that every crown has a backstory.
