In a fiery Oversight Committee hearing, Rep. Jasmine Crockett accused Republicans of abandoning their oversight responsibilities in favor of partisan distractions. Her remarks centered on corruption, climate change, and the human consequences of policy choices, highlighting what she described as misplaced priorities.

Corruption and Misplaced Oversight

Crockett opened by charging that congressional Republicans have been “protecting pedophiles and rapists” rather than focusing on government accountability. She argued that the Trump administration turned the federal government into “the world’s largest Ponzi scheme,” funneling benefits to the wealthy while cutting programs vital to working families. Instead of hearings on tariffs, healthcare, or misuse of federal funds, Crockett said Republicans have been pushing conspiracies that distract from real problems.

She pointed to decisions that she believes have harmed everyday Americans: reduced healthcare access, weakened food and childcare assistance, and attacks on environmental protections. In her view, these choices worsen inequality and leave vulnerable communities—particularly Black and brown families—at greater risk.

Climate Change as an Urgent Reality

Crockett emphasized that climate change is not a theory but a reality already visible in record-breaking heat and costly natural disasters. Citing reports showing August 2025 as the third-hottest on record and billions in damages from climate-related events, she called for a renewed focus on solutions.

She also pressed expert witness Dr. Michael McCracken on the consequences of defunding research and universities. McCracken agreed that cutting climate science programs deters students and limits progress, while historically Black colleges have played a critical role in studying regional climate impacts. Crockett underscored that eliminating such research has direct consequences for communities living in industrialized and environmentally vulnerable areas.

From Conspiracies to Solutions

Throughout her remarks, Crockett criticized what she described as Republican reliance on “chemtrail conspiracy” hearings rather than substantive discussions. She stressed the need for evidence-based policymaking, particularly as the planet warms and disasters multiply. While acknowledging that no one has perfectly predicted the timeline of climate impacts, she noted that even Republican witnesses admitted the Earth is heating up.

Her central question: how to “turn the heat down” and confront the crisis with science instead of rhetoric. Crockett concluded by warning that defunding experts and sidelining research undermines the nation’s ability to prepare for the future, leaving families exposed to health risks, higher costs, and environmental hazards.

For Crockett, the fight is not simply about partisanship—it is about survival, fairness, and protecting communities from both corruption and climate chaos.
