Two middle school boys are facing a long list of charges after deputies say they caused more than $50,000 worth of damage inside an elementary school library. The case has drawn attention not just because of the destruction, but because both boys were ultimately turned in by their own mothers.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office says the 12- and 13-year-old broke into Friendship Elementary School in Deltona, Florida, shattering a glass door and ransacking the media center. Bodycam footage shared by the department shows deputies moving through the wreckage: tables flipped over, chairs scattered, and books and supplies tossed across the floor. Officers described the space as a scene of deliberate chaos, with nothing left untouched.
The vandalism didn’t happen all at once. Investigators believe the boys broke into the school during daylight hours, left, and then came back that evening to check on the damage and cause even more. According to the sheriff’s office, the boys later confessed to everything after their mothers came forward.
Authorities posted images of two suspects to social media, and within hours, tips started pouring in. But in the end, it was their mothers who finally turned them in. In a statement, the sheriff’s office thanked the community and the moms for coming forward so quickly to take care of business.
The charges are serious. Each boy is facing two counts of burglary, two counts of trespassing on school grounds, criminal mischief, and theft. Because they’re minors, their names have not been released, but both now find themselves caught in the juvenile justice system, with a price tag attached to their actions that would make most adults’ heads spin.
Friendship Elementary released a statement saying that they have “Zero tolerance for destruction of property and vandalism… Despite the incident, our students, families, and staff have approached the week with positivity and camaraderie.”
At the end of the day there are no real winners here. The library remains in ruins, which has to be a staggering financial loss to Friendship Elementary, and a violation of the sense of safety schools are meant to provide. On the other, there are parents making a painful choice to do the right thing, and a school community choosing to rally rather than dwell.
