Addison Brown, a 22-year-old woman from Kentucky, has been charged with attempted murder after authorities say she deliberately set her sister’s mattress on fire while her sister was still sleeping in it.

The incident dates back to June 1, when Louisville Metro Police arson investigators were called to a duplex after reports of a fire inside one of the units. By the time firefighters and police arrived, the flames were out — extinguished by the quick actions of Brown’s sister, who investigators say awoke to find her bed igniting beneath her. She reportedly rolled off the mattress and smothered the flames with a pillow before they spread.

But the damage went beyond the singed bedding. Court documents show that five people were inside the home that night, including a child. Investigators say the fire could have easily spread throughout the unit and into the larger building. Brown, however, had already fled the scene before police arrived.

The case might have ended as a mystery fire, but detectives allege they uncovered damning evidence in the weeks that followed. According to the arrest warrant, Brown sent a series of messages to multiple people — including her sister — admitting that she had set the mattress ablaze with the intent to kill her. Those messages turned what looked like a reckless act of arson into something much darker.

After months of investigation, Brown was arrested on September 12 and charged with attempted murder (domestic violence), first-degree arson, and four counts of wanton endangerment. Taken together, the charges paint a grim picture. Attempted murder in Kentucky carries a sentence of 10 to 20 years. Arson in the first degree — because it involved a dwelling and endangered human life — can mean up to 50 years. The wanton endangerment charges add another potential five years apiece.

At her first court appearance, a judge set Brown’s bond at $250,000. She is due back before the court on September 22.

Prosecutors allege Brown plotted to kill her own sister in a place meant to be safe, while others, including a child, slept nearby.

These charges arrive amid a steady drumbeat of domestic violence cases that remind us that home, for many, can be the most dangerous place of all. Here, what might have once been sibling disputes or family dysfunction seems to have erupted into a deliberate attempt on a life.

For the courts, the next step will be to weigh evidence, testimony, and the severity of intent. For Brown’s sister, and the others who were in the duplex that night, the trauma may be harder to measure. Waking up to find your mattress set on fire is the kind of thing that you just forget.
