At a recent Committee on Oversight and Government Reform hearing, Rep. Ansari (D-AZ), former vice mayor of Phoenix, delivered a sharp rebuke of the Trump administration’s decision to withhold $1 billion from Washington, D.C.’s local budget. She described the move as unjust, harmful to residents, and a dangerous abuse of federal power.
Ansari began by underscoring the uniqueness of D.C.’s situation: unlike any other U.S. city, its budget is subject to congressional approval. She argued that withholding such a large sum—raised by D.C. taxpayers, not the federal government—was unfair and damaging to over 700,000 residents who already lack full representation in Congress.
She compared the impact to other major cities. “Imagine if this were Phoenix, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, or Dallas,” she said. “A $1 billion withholding of budget from a city government has massive implications.” The withheld funds, she noted, could have gone to critical services like public safety, health care, and community programs.
Ansari accused Trump of treating the capital as “his personal playground,” deploying U.S. military service members to city streets for optics rather than necessity. She described seeing reservists tasked with duties such as picking up trash or directing traffic, instead of focusing on national security or counterterrorism.
The congresswoman went further, calling Trump a “dictator” and claiming he used these moves to project strength while ignoring real threats. She pointed to the redirection of counterterrorism and anti-trafficking resources toward immigration enforcement as another example of misplaced priorities.
Despite sharp criticism, Ansari emphasized the need for bipartisan cooperation to restore D.C.’s withheld funding. “Making this right will make this city and region safer, stronger, and better for everyone,” she concluded.
The controversy highlights the long-standing debate over D.C.’s autonomy and statehood, raising larger questions about fairness, governance, and the balance of power between local and federal authorities.
