On Thursday morning Nadine Menendez, wife of former U.S. Senator Robert Menendez, received a sentence four and a half years in prison for her role in a bribery scheme that has already reshaped the trajectory of her husband’s once-powerful political career.
Menendez, 58, was been convicted in April on 15 counts, including bribery, after jurors found she acted as a middle link between her husband and Egyptian officials, arranging meetings and relaying messages that greased the wheels of a corrupt bargain.
Yet when it was her turn to speak, Menendez broke down in tears. “I put my life in his hands and he strung me like a puppet,” she told the judge. “He was one of the most powerful men in the most powerful country on earth, and there was no way he’d lead me astray—or so I thought.”
Robert Menendez, the former senior Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was sentenced last year to 11 years in prison. His position was overseeing U.S. foreign policy decisions that prosecutors say he secretly manipulated in Egypt’s favor. Nadine, they argued, played a crucial role in carrying messages, brokering meetings, and in some cases, shielding her husband from direct involvement.
Prosecutors asked for a sentence of at least seven years, pointing to the gravity of a scheme that involved gold bars, envelopes of cash, and a luxury Mercedes-Benz. But U.S. District Judge Sidney H. Stein opted for a 54-month term, citing both the seriousness of her crimes and her recent health struggles.
“People have to understand there are consequences,” Stein said. At the same time, he agreed to delay the start of her sentence until next July so that she could undergo medical treatment, including procedures related to her breast cancer diagnosis.
The Menendez home in New Jersey was raided by the FBI in 2022. Agents uncovered more than $100,000 worth of gold bars and hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash stuffed in envelopes or tucked into jackets. The evidence also included text messages and even a Google search by the senator himself: “How much is one kilo of gold worth?”
Several associates were caught up in the scandal as well. New Jersey property developer Fred Daibes and businessman Wael Hana were both convicted for their roles, while insurance broker Jose Uribe pleaded guilty in 2024.
