Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA and one of the most visible figures on the American right, was shot Tuesday during a campus event at Utah Valley University in Orem. He was rushed from the scene by his security team and taken to the hospital.

The university confirmed that a suspect is in custody. Witnesses described a chaotic scramble as the single gunshot echoed across the outdoor pavilion. Attendees dove to the ground before rushing for the exits, some climbing over barricades. A bystander told NBC News that police quickly subdued an older man with white hair, who shouted about his rights as he was handcuffed.

Kirk’s organization, Turning Point USA, issued a brief statement: “He is in the hospital, and we are praying for him at this time.” The full extent of his injuries has not yet been disclosed, but officials say he is alive and under medical care.

The incident comes just a year after an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, an ally and frequent promoter of Kirk’s work. Trump, who has often praised Kirk in speeches, once called him “a special talent” and “an amazing guy.” Their alliance has been central to the broader project of mobilizing young conservatives across the country.

Kirk is not only a movement leader but also a husband and father of two. His wife, Erika Frantzve, has her own high-profile background as Miss Arizona USA 2012. A former college basketball player turned beauty queen, Frantzve built her reputation on a blend of athletic grit and public service. She’s the founder of the nonprofit Everyday Heroes Like You.

For years she has been a fixture alongside Kirk at conservative events, balancing the spotlight with her own ventures in community work and education. Friends say the couple’s marriage has long been a source of grounding for Kirk amid the demands of activism. Tuesday’s violence is surely testing that bond in a way neither could have anticipated.

Utah Valley University has not commented on why no metal detectors were in place for the gathering, though security had been assigned to Kirk himself.

UPDATE : President Trump has has confirmed that Kirk is dead after being shot during an event in Utah.
