A Massachusetts community is reeling after a woman was found dead in her father’s apartment, and her brother now stands accused of killing her.

The victim has been identified as 38-year-old Michelle Knox. Her brother, 30-year-old Joshua Smith, was arraigned Monday on charges of murder and kidnapping. According to prosecutors, Smith was standing outside the Newhall Street apartment in the early hours of Sunday, Sept. 7, when officers arrived. Instead of denying involvement, he allegedly made “numerous inculpatory statements” to police — statements that prosecutors say immediately turned him into the prime suspect in his sister’s killing.

Inside, officers found Knox dead. Authorities have not released details about how she died, and the official complaint has been temporarily impounded while the investigation is still in its early stages. Prosecutors have also requested that the court issue a no-contact order for other members of the family.

Neighbors say they were startled awake by what they described as gut-wrenching sounds. Emilio Gonzales, who lives nearby, told Boston 25 that he heard “horrific screams, like somebody got stabbed or something.” For him and for others on the block, those screams have been impossible to forget.

The case has rattled not just the community, but the family itself. Knox’s mother, Carleen, wrote on Facebook that she was struggling to comprehend what had happened. “Michelle I love you so much you did not deserve this you were so special MY FIRST Born!! This is so hard I’m going crazy thinking I can’t yell at you lecture you. R.I.P I’m fighting for you justice will be served for you.”

Friends have also spoken out. Tia Pittman told NBC10 Boston that Knox was like a cousin growing up. “She was always so happy, so goofy, so proud. She always worked hard to do right,” Pittman said. That memory now collides with the brutal way her life ended.

In court, Smith’s defense attorney Michael Phelan acknowledged the gravity of the situation. “Every one of these cases is a difficult situation. No matter if someone is guilty or not guilty. It’s still, we have an individual who’s passed away and it’s very, very sad,” he told reporters. Phelan entered a not guilty plea on Smith’s behalf.

Smith has been ordered held without bail until a probable cause hearing scheduled for Oct. 14. Investigators from local and state police, along with the state medical examiner, continue to piece together what led to Knox’s death.

For now, the community of Lynn is left with more questions than answers. What’s clear is the weight of the loss — a daughter, a friend, a neighbor — and the haunting echoes of screams that, for one family, marked the final moments of a life cut short.
