On the House floor, former Speaker Nancy Pelosi delivered heartfelt remarks honoring the life and legacy of John Burton, a longtime California political figure known for his forceful advocacy on behalf of working families.

Pelosi began by offering condolences to Burton’s family and gratitude for his decades of public service. Joined by colleagues including Reps. Maxine Waters, Mike Thompson, Doris Matsui, and Mark DeSaulnier, she described Burton as “one of the most outspoken and unyielding champions our nation has ever seen.”

Reflecting on their personal connection, Pelosi recalled Burton as both mentor and friend. He managed her first congressional campaign in 1987, a campaign that launched her long career in Congress. She said his guidance and humor remained a source of inspiration throughout her decades of service.

Known for his colorful language and blunt style, Burton was also recognized for his deep compassion. Pelosi highlighted his vision of a society without homelessness or hunger, one rooted in equality, opportunity, and peace. His work extended across multiple roles: as a member of Congress, leader in the California legislature, and twice as chair of the state’s Democratic Party.

Pelosi noted Burton’s wide influence, not only in politics but also through his relationships in music, sports, and community life. His efforts included a foundation dedicated to ending child homelessness, especially among foster children.

She emphasized that his legacy lives on tangibly through such initiatives and even through a California highway named in his honor. Addressing Burton’s daughter and grandchildren, Pelosi said the nation joins them in mourning and remembering him.

Pelosi concluded by expressing hope that Burton will be remembered as a “legendary liberal lion” whose unwavering voice for the vulnerable left an indelible mark on California and the country.
