Employees connected to Sansum Clinic in Santa Barbara are under fire after a series of social media posts appeared to mock patients using exam rooms. Screenshots of the posts, which circulated widely over Labor Day weekend, show workers posing in front of what appear to be bodily fluids left behind on paper exam sheets.
The images were shared on Instagram, TikTok, and Reddit before the accounts were deleted. But local residents saved screenshots, and soon the images spread widely across Santa Barbara social channels. Commenters said they traced the accounts back to an employee of Sansum Clinic’s urgent care center on Pesetas Lane, which is now part of Sutter Health.
The posts included captions like “make sure to leave your healthcare workers sweet gifts like these,” with employees pointing to stains on exam tables. Other images carried hashtags like “#FYP” to boost visibility on TikTok, along with captions encouraging followers to “guess the substance.” At least six photos with similar content were reposted after the originals were removed.
By the weekend, community reaction had hardened into outrage. “Nurse to nurse.. you should be ashamed of yourself,” one commenter wrote. “For the way you embarrassed your patients, yourself, your employer, your coworkers, your family and the entire nursing community. Respectfully, find a new career.”
Another Santa Barbara resident said the posts “violate patient privacy and might be illegal,” urging the clinic to act swiftly to protect trust in local healthcare.
The anger quickly spilled over into online reviews, with people leaving negative comments on Google and Yelp for multiple Sansum locations.
Sutter Health, which now oversees Sansum’s clinics, acknowledged the controversy and confirmed that the person who posted the photos is no longer employed. In a statement, the health system said it has launched an investigation into whether any current staff members were involved.
“The trust and dignity of our patients always remain our top priority,” the statement read. “We are deeply concerned about a disrespectful social media post made on a personal account by a former employee and we are conducting a full review in line with our policies. Any other staff shown or associated with the content are part of the investigation. The post goes against the values, professionalism and respect we expect from all staff. We have strict policies to protect patient privacy and dignity and any behavior that disrespects those standards is unacceptable.”
For a clinic long trusted in Santa Barbara, the episode has struck a nerve. What began as a handful of thoughtless posts has snowballed into a community-wide debate about professionalism, privacy, and respect in healthcare. And it has left Sutter Health working to reassure patients that the people they trust with their care won’t treat them as fodder for social media.
