The rise of Ariela Mejia-Polanco, known to her half-million Instagram followers as Ariela “La Langosta,” reflected the new world of internet celebrity — part fashion model, part nightlife fixture, part social media confidante to a rapper with his own notorious reputation. Her death, police now say, was no accident.
On August 17, the 33-year-old influencer was found shot to death in her car on the Cross County Parkway in Westchester County, N.Y. Authorities believe she was struck while driving and managed to pull her car to the side of the road before succumbing to her injuries. Westchester County Police Chief James Luciano confirmed this week that investigators believe she was “targeted,” though they are holding back details to protect the case.
Mejia-Polanco had been at work the night before at Ikon New York, a Manhattan restaurant and lounge where she was a well-known presence. Hours later, she was dead on the side of a highway. The Westchester County Police Department, the NYPD, and the FBI Safe Streets Task Force are now working jointly to piece together her final movements and to understand who wanted her gone.
For her followers, news of her killing was a shock. Mejia-Polanco had built a following of more than 556,000 on Instagram by posting a steady stream of fashion content, behind-the-scenes glimpses of nightlife, and slices of her personal life. Her high-profile friendship with rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine, a magnet for controversy in his own right, only amplified her visibility. In the days after her death, he posted a tribute on Instagram, calling her “the queen of New York” and adding: “NY won’t ever be the same. I loved you.”
Tributes also poured in from Ikon New York, which described her as someone who “always made you stand out” because of her warmth and humility. “You were our smile, our happiness,” the restaurant wrote. “We love you and we will miss you forever.”
Behind the glamour, Mejia-Polanco was a mother of two young daughters. Police have not publicly identified suspects, but the suggestion that she was targeted has only heightened speculation among her fans and community.
