Courtney Martin vanished on May 16, 2023, after a phone call to her mother from an intersection near her home in Smith County, Texas. She asked for a ride, but when her mother arrived just minutes later, Courtney was gone. That was the last time anyone heard from her.

Now, investigators believe they may finally have found her. Earlier this week, human remains were discovered in a pond in New Harmony, Texas. Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith said authorities are confident the skeletal remains belong to Martin, though forensic testing will provide confirmation.

The discovery closes one chapter of a mystery that has lingered since that May afternoon in 2023. Authorities long suspected foul play, especially given how abruptly she disappeared and how close she was to her family’s home when she called for help. Despite exhaustive searches, months of interviews, and countless leads, nothing surfaced.

The break came this summer, when a group of young men stumbled upon a backpack near a pond, later confirmed to belong to Martin. That discovery redirected attention to the site. By early July, investigators hoped to search the water with a dive team from the Texas Department of Public Safety. But devastating flooding in Kerr County pulled resources elsewhere, delaying the operation.

When the dive finally happened on Tuesday, August 26, investigators found skeletal remains almost immediately. For Sheriff Smith and his team, the find marks the beginning of what he described as an “all-hands-on-deck” criminal investigation.

Martin’s remains have since been sent to the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas for testing and identification. Authorities have stressed that every avenue will be pursued in determining not only how she died, but who may be responsible.

For Martin’s mother, the news offers a complicated kind of closure. The lingering question of where her daughter went may finally have an answer. But as the sheriff acknowledged, closure is not the same as justice. What remains is the harder question—what happened to Courtney that night, and why?

In Texas, where missing persons cases often slip quietly from headlines, Martin’s story now takes on new urgency. The discovery of her remains does not end her story. It begins a new phase—one where the facts of her disappearance must be laid bare, and where the weight of accountability, if foul play is confirmed, will finally come due.
