Far-right activist Laura Loomer has never held a White House job. But that hasn’t stopped her from shaping the politics and policies of the Trump administration from the outside.

The State Department’s recent decision to pause the issuance of visitor visas to people from Gaza is just the latest example of Loomer’s reach. The move came after she publicly pressured the administration and even personally raised concerns with Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Loomer, who has a long history of anti-Muslim activism, targeted a nonprofit that had been helping injured children from Gaza come to the United States for care, calling the flights a “national security threat.” Within days, the visas were halted.

Loomer has met with Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance in recent months, and no matter how much the White House says she’s not advising the administration we’ve seen time and time again that’s exactly what it seems like she’s doing. Recently in a vist to the Oval Office she made noise about staffing at the National Security Council, it wasn’t long before several of the officials she had issues with were pushed out.

That kind of access has unsettled even some of Trump’s closest allies. Members of Congress like Sen. Lindsey Graham and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene have a pointed issue with how much influence she has over the president. The Hill reports that White House officials have done their best to keep her from getting a more formal role, something that Loomer herself has vented about. She posted online that she has been promised jobs with Trump’s team “four times” but still cannot get an official press pass.

Her track record suggests she doesn’t need one. Loomer has thrown herself into battles over appointments at the Department of Health and Human Services, including an attempt to oust the administration’s top vaccine regulator. That effort initially succeeded before Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. intervened to reinstate him. Kennedy, who has himself become a target of Loomer’s ire, was forced to issue a public denial that he was preparing a presidential run in 2028 after Loomer accused one of his aides of plotting for that very outcome.

The Gaza visa fight, however, highlights the broader implications of Loomer’s influence. She has spent years pushing anti-Muslim rhetoric, describing Islam as a “cancer” and once proudly calling herself an Islamophobe. Those views got her banned from Twitter before Elon Musk restored her account. Now, with a direct line to decision-makers, the kind of rhetoric she has trafficked in for years appears to be shaping policy at the highest levels of government.

For Trump, it’s a balancing act. Loomer represents a fiercely loyal corner of his base, and he has praised her as a “great patriot.” But her presence also brings friction inside his administration and among his allies. What is clear is that Loomer shows no signs of slowing down.
