A 71-year-old Florida woman is behind bars after authorities say she lured a father and his two daughters to her property and held them at gunpoint in a bizarre case that’s left authorities reeling over what caused this strange incident.
According to the Wakulla County Sheriff’s Department, Helen Litchfield has been charged with three counts of kidnapping, three counts of aggravated assault, and one count of armed burglary. She was arrested Friday and booked into the Wakulla County Jail.
The incident began on August 4, when a father and his two daughters, both under the age of 13, were fishing from a bridge. Deputies say Litchfield approached them and invited the family to come fish at her pond. Once at her home, however, the situation took a disturbing turn.
Investigators say Litchfield produced a gun and ordered the family to stay put, telling them she didn’t believe the man was actually the girls’ father. Despite the family’s insistence that they were related, Litchfield allegedly searched them while holding the weapon. Deputies also believe she rifled through the family’s car while they were on her property.
At some point during the ordeal, Litchfield’s roommate quietly led the family to a fence at the edge of the property. With Litchfield distracted, they scrambled to safety and ran to alert law enforcement. Police later arrived at the scene, though it’s unclear whether the family returned to collect their car or left it behind until deputies could secure it.
The sheriff’s office has not suggested any broader motive beyond Litchfield’s apparent suspicion that the father was not who he claimed to be. But the strangeness of the case — an elderly woman allegedly luring children to her property under the pretense of fishing, then pulling a gun and accusing their parent of deception — has rattled the community.
WCTV, which first reported the incident, noted that no one was physically harmed, though the trauma for the children may linger. The sheriff’s office has also not explained what led Litchfield to believe the family was lying, or whether she had a history of erratic behavior.
For now, the focus is on the serious charges she faces. Kidnapping alone can carry a life sentence under Florida law, and the added charges of aggravated assault and armed burglary mean Litchfield’s legal troubles are considerable.
What started as a summer afternoon of fishing turned into a real-life horror movie, with an escape only made possible with the help of a stranger. Investigators are working on piecing together why all of this happened, and until then Litchfield will remain in Wakulla County Jail awaiting her day in court.
