A Madison County woman is facing a felony charge after police say she went on a destructive spree against her ex-boyfriend’s car, leaving it beyond repair and racking up more than $12,000 in damages.
Court records show Stephanie Carlquist has been charged with criminal mischief, accused of pouring salt into the engine, stuffing glitter into the air vents, slashing a tire, cracking both the windshield and rearview mirror, and smashing the radio screen. The car, investigators said, had to be towed and was later declared a total loss.
The victim told police he was blindsided by the sabotage. According to an estimate from Goodyear in Richmond, the damages totaled $12,464.96. The car, they said, simply couldn’t be saved.
Police reports indicate that Carlquist didn’t exactly hide what she’d done. In messages obtained by investigators, she admitted to part of the damage, writing, “The only thing I did was put glitter in the air vents and hurt the windshield. He was overdue for oil and motor and everything else. Oh, and the tire.”
Officers say her admissions didn’t stop there. When the tow truck driver arrived to haul the car away, Carlquist allegedly told him directly that she had damaged the vehicle. The driver later passed that information along to the victim’s mother, according to court documents.
Afterward, Carlquist reportedly sent her ex-boyfriend a message on Instagram apologizing. She said she had been under stress because of her pregnancy and expressed regret over what had happened. When police later questioned her, she again acknowledged the glitter and windshield damage but insisted that other mechanical problems had already been present.
Carlquist is being held at the Madison County Detention Center on a $12,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday, Aug. 18.
What may have started as an act of frustration now leaves Carlquist facing the possibility of a felony conviction and her ex-boyfriend left without a car.
