Authorities in Sumter County, South Carolina, are investigating the deaths of two women whose bodies were found in a rural clearing last week, one of whom was killed by gunfire.

The victims — identified as 38-year-old Kristen N. Grissom of North Charleston and 35-year-old Christine Marie McAbee of Walterboro — were discovered on the afternoon of August 8 by a landowner in the Rembert area. Deputies responded to the scene on Richbow Road around 1:17 p.m., where, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, the bodies appeared to have been deliberately placed.

At a press conference Tuesday, Sheriff Anthony Dennis said the women likely died about a day before they were found. Investigators believe they were killed elsewhere before their remains were moved to the site.

An autopsy confirmed McAbee died from a gunshot wound, Sumter County Coroner Robert M. Baker Jr. told reporters. The cause of death for Grissom remains pending while her autopsy is completed. Until those results are returned, her death is being investigated as a potential homicide.

The sheriff’s office noted that the women knew each other, though the nature of their relationship has not been publicly detailed. Dennis emphasized that, based on current information, the incident appears to be isolated and there is no ongoing threat to the community.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is assisting local investigators. Dennis said multiple tips have come in since the bodies were found but declined to comment on whether any suspects have been identified. “We are following every lead,” he said, underscoring the importance of public assistance in moving the case forward.

The identifications were made through fingerprints, DNA analysis, and distinctive tattoos, according to Baker. Both women were from cities roughly 90 miles apart, adding another layer of complexity to the investigation.

For residents in and around Rembert, a rural community about 40 miles east of Columbia, the discovery has raised unsettling questions about how two women from different parts of the state ended up in the same isolated clearing. Law enforcement officials have not provided details about possible motives, timelines, or the events that led to their deaths.

Anyone with information that could assist investigators is urged to contact the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office at 803-436-2000 or submit tips online at http://www.p3tips.com.

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on piecing together the women’s final hours and determining who was responsible for placing their bodies in a quiet stretch of rural Sumter County — and why.
