After more than three decades of unanswered questions, new court documents are shedding light on the horrific 1993 murder of 12-year-old Jennifer Odom—a case that haunted Florida’s Hernando and Pasco Counties for a generation.

Jennifer vanished on February 19, 1993, after getting off her school bus just 200 yards from her rural Dade City home. The walk should have taken minutes. Instead, her disappearance triggered a massive search that ended six days later, when a couple found her body in an abandoned orange grove.

Now, investigators say they are closer than ever to securing justice. Court documents made public this week show that Jeffrey Crum—already serving two life sentences for a separate 1992 attack—allegedly confessed to Odom’s murder and another brutal rape in disturbing conversations with his son.

According to the documents, Crum told his son that he “did a lot of bad things and hurt a lot of people in his life” before referencing “the little Black girl” and adding, “I did that.” He then admitted he “also ‘did’ Odom.”

Authorities say Crum’s DNA links him to the 1992 Pasco County assault of a 17-year-old girl who, like Odom, was abducted shortly after getting off a school bus. DNA collected from that earlier crime went unmatched for decades until new familial testing in 2015 identified Crum through his son’s DNA. That connection made Crum the top suspect in Odom’s unsolved case, though charges weren’t formally brought until 2024.

Sheriff Al Nienhuis of Hernando County emphasized that Crum’s familiarity with the area and ownership of a blue pickup truck—seen by Odom’s schoolmates on the day of her disappearance—only deepened suspicion. Despite investigators refusing to disclose the precise timing behind the arrest, they now say they are confident in the evidence and hopeful for a conviction.

The silver-lining of this truly grim news is the way that evolving technology helps authorities track down perpetraotrs while giving families closure. Sheriff Nienhuis believes there are still people with information who haven’t come forward and urged them to speak up. “We are 100% positive that there are individuals out there that have more information about the Jennifer abduction and murder,” he said.
