Sometimes a news story feels more like a moment from a soap opera. But Brazilian TV reporter Clara Nery experienced the kind of pre-broadcast chaos you can’t prepare for. Two days ago her phone was ripped out of her hand by a motorcycle riding thief seconds before she went live on air.

A behind-the-scenes video posted to social media shows Nery standing calmly with her phone in hand, ready to go live for TV Paraíba. Then, in a blink, a motorcyclist rides past and snatches the phone out of her grip.

Fortunately, the thief dropped the phone immediately, and Nery was able to recover it unharmed. “Luckily, and despite his lack of skill, I managed to retrieve the phone,” she later wrote. “But we already have the security camera footage, the camera that managed to focus on his face.”

Local authorities are reportedly reviewing the footage to identify the suspect, but the moment has already gone viral for its almost cinematic timing—and Nery’s cool-headed recovery.

“A scare of those to go live,” she added in a translated post on social media, “but the important thing is that everything turned out fine!”

It’s unclear whether the attempted thief knew he was targeting a reporter mid-prep, but the timing couldn’t have been worse—or better, depending on your appetite for viral news drama. Within hours, the video had circulated widely in Brazil and beyond, with fans praising Nery’s composure and humor.

Clara Nery has not only earned a new layer of street cred, but she also reminded us all just how unpredictable life in front of the camera can be. One minute you’re reviewing your script, the next you’re chasing down a phone thief.

Despite the scare, Nery went on to file her report as planned—a true “the show must go on” moment. And thanks to the security footage, there’s hope that the motorcyclist may soon face justice.

Until then, Nery gets to wear the unofficial badge of “reporter most likely to go viral while prepping a live shot.” And yes, she still made her air time.
