The White House has issued a rare public rebuke of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, following reports that he had directed members of his Pentagon staff to submit to polygraph examinations in a sweeping effort to root out suspected leakers. The move, which sparked internal backlash and alarm among senior advisors, prompted direct intervention from White House officials after one of Hegseth’s own allies raised concerns.

According to The Washington Post, senior adviser Patrick Weaver—an immigration hawk known for his close ties to Trump advisor Stephen Miller—was among those who sounded the alarm. Weaver feared he would soon be compelled to take a lie detector test, and took his concerns to officials at the White House. What followed was a behind-the-scenes effort to rein in Hegseth, whose conduct has raised fresh questions about his temperament and priorities.

MSNBC anchor Nicolle Wallace didn’t mince words when reacting to the report on air, calling Hegseth’s use of polygraphs “obsessive paranoia” and a distraction from real national security leadership. “What a hot mess Pete Hegseth is,” Wallace said, noting that polygraphs are typically used sparingly—and for narrowly defined national security purposes—not as tools to enforce internal loyalty.

“Pete Hegseth is an unusual personality type to be running a huge bureaucracy like the Pentagon,” added Ben Rhodes, former deputy national security advisor under President Obama. “If he’s spending time policing loyalty and ordering polygraphs, what happens when there’s a real crisis?”

The issue, as Wallace and her guests emphasized, is not just the misuse of security tools, but the deeper culture of fear and retaliation that appears to be taking hold within the administration. Wallace pointed out that Hegseth reportedly threatened high-ranking military officers with polygraphs, including Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Christopher Grady and Army Lieutenant General Doug Sims.

This episode echoes other recent controversies involving government officials using intimidation tactics to enforce loyalty. Wallace said, “This is almost like the Epstein story—no accountability until one MAGA loyalist turns on another.”

Hegseth, a Fox News personality turned cabinet secretary, has long been a controversial figure. His confirmation process was marred by concerns over inexperience and fiery temperament, concerns that now feel justified. Analysts speculate that the leak of this story itself suggests growing hostility toward Hegseth from within Trump’s own ranks—a signal that his days in the cabinet may be numbered.

Whether this latest crisis leads to real accountability remains to be seen.
