Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi defended former President Joe Biden’s legacy and leadership during a recent interview, brushing aside suggestions that she has any regrets about his presidency, while sharply criticizing Republicans for what she described as their embrace of an “unsound” leader in Donald Trump.

“I have no second thoughts,” Pelosi said, adding that Biden’s legislative achievements during the first two years of his term were comparable in impact to those of presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and Franklin D. Roosevelt. In the interview, she emphasized that although Biden’s tenure may have been shorter than theirs, the quality of his accomplishments—particularly in healthcare, infrastructure, and economic recovery—should not be overlooked.

Pelosi, who spoke with Biden most recently at the funeral of Ethel Kennedy, called the president a “super patriot” and praised his commitment to the Constitution. “He did great things for our country,” she said. “He loved America and honored our Constitution.”

But Pelosi saved her sharpest words for the Republican Party and Trump, who continues to dominate GOP politics. “If they want to measure mental acuity or sanity, they ought to look to their own president,” she said, referring to Trump’s recent remarks in which he accused former President Barack Obama of treason in response to an unrelated question.

“The President of the United States who was asked one question and answers by saying President Obama is guilty of treason is not of sane mind,” Pelosi said bluntly, implying that Trump’s continued political presence is a more pressing concern than any speculation about Biden’s capacity or decisions.

These comments from Pelosi are coming at a time when the Democratic Party is dealing with internal strife over both strategy and who’ll be leading them in the future. It’s clear that whoever moves forward as the leader of the Dems will be going head to head with Trump and Trump-aligned candidates in the 2026 and 2028 elections.

During the 2024 election, Biden’s age and political durability led Democrats to call for the former president to step away from the election, leading to his vice president, Kamala Harris to run in his place. Now, as the party navigates the post-Biden era, Pelosi is acknowledging the political difficulty of the moment. She told CNN, “It’s unfortunate that it went down this path.”

Nevertheless, she expressed optimism that history would remember Biden favorably—not only for what he achieved legislatively, but for how he carried himself in office.

“History will treat him well,” she said.

As both parties gear up for a contentious election season, Pelosi’s remarks show voters the deep partisan divide not just over policy, but over the very character and competence of America’s political leaders.
