The search for 22-year-old Eliotte Heinz, a graduate student at Viterbo University in La Crosse, Wisconsin, came to a tragic end Wednesday morning when authorities discovered her body in the Mississippi River near Brownsville, Minnesota. The La Crosse Police Department confirmed the identification shortly after a fisherman called 911 around 10:30 a.m.

Heinz had been missing since the early hours of Sunday, when she was last seen leaving Bronco’s Bar in downtown La Crosse at approximately 2:30 a.m. Surveillance footage later captured her walking alone southbound along Front Street near the river at 3:22 a.m.—the final confirmed sighting of her.

Her family reported Heinz missing on Sunday afternoon. By that time she hadn’t returned home or responded to calls, texts, or any other form of communication. The community jumped to attention. They posted flyers, organized search parties, and social media lit up with posts asking for help and information. Viterbo University opened its doors to volunteers, turning the campus into an informal headquarters for the search.

“We just wanted to say thank you to everyone who came out to help us search for her,” one family member said earlier in the week. “All the volunteers have been incredible.”

As the search kicked into high gear, authorities asked residents and businesses to review surveillance footage between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. on Sunday, hoping to track Heinz’s movements. The La Crosse Police Department also coordinated with other agencies and deployed search teams along the riverfront.

The discovery of her body in Brownsville, about 15 miles downriver from La Crosse, brought the four-day search to a sorrowful close. “This was not the outcome we had hoped for throughout this search,” said La Crosse Police Chief Shawn Kudron. “Our thoughts are with Eliotte’s family, friends, and all those who knew her. We are grateful for the outpouring of support from so many within the La Crosse community, the State of Wisconsin, and nationally.”

As of this time there is no known cause of death. The La Crosse Police Department states that the investigation remains active, and they are collaborating with medical examiners and law enforcement in Minnesota to determine how Heinz ended up in the river.

Heinz was a well-regarded student pursuing graduate studies at Viterbo University. Her death has prompted an outpouring of grief from the university community, with students and faculty mourning the loss of a young woman described as compassionate, ambitious, and deeply engaged with her studies and peers.

Police have not indicated foul play, but emphasized that the investigation is ongoing.

As the community mourns, a vigil is being planned in her memory at Viterbo University. More details are expected to be released in the coming days.
