Lori Vallow Daybell, the woman infamously known as the “Doomsday Mom,” was sentenced Friday to two additional life sentences in Arizona for plotting to kill her estranged husband, Charles Vallow, and her niece’s ex-husband, Brandon Boudreaux. Already serving a life sentence in Idaho for the murders of her two children, the new sentences put an end to a disturbing and brutal chapter of modern history.
In a Maricopa County courtroom, Judge Justin Beresky delivered a scathing rebuke of Daybell’s actions, emphasizing the manipulation, planning, and psychological control she used to carry out her crimes. “The amount of contemplation, calculation, planning, and manipulation that went into these crimes is unparalleled in my career,” he said. “Your powers of manipulation are profoundly destructive—ones that undermine trust, distort truth, and erode the very foundations of healthy relationships and society.”
Daybell, who chose to represent herself during trial, maintained that she was denied the opportunity to present her case and claimed she couldn’t receive a fair trial in Arizona. Judge Beresky dismissed that assertion outright, pointing out that two juries composed of 24 independent jurors had unanimously convicted her based on the evidence.
The judge also acknowledged the victims and their families, describing how Daybell’s crimes had sent shockwaves far beyond the immediate circle of those killed or targeted. “You’ve left a wake of destruction stretching from Louisiana, across Texas, Arizona, up to Idaho and back again,” he said.
Family members of the victims confronted Daybell directly during the sentencing hearing. Kay Woodcock, grandmother of murdered 7-year-old Joshua “JJ” Vallow, called her “a manipulator, a parasite, and a coward.” JJ’s grandfather, Larry Woodcock, yelled from the gallery: “I will never speak your name again, murderess. You are nothing.”
Colby Ryan, Daybell’s only surviving child, spoke through tears. “Rather than being able to acknowledge the pain that she has caused, she would rather say that Charles, Tylee, and JJ’s deaths were a family tragedy and not her evil doing,” he said. “Quite frankly, I believe that Lori Vallow herself is the family tragedy.”
Authorities say Daybell conspired with her brother, Alex Cox—who died of natural causes in 2019—to murder Charles Vallow and attempted to orchestrate the killing of Boudreaux, who narrowly survived an attempt on his life. Prosecutors alleged these crimes were motivated by religious delusions and financial gain, including life insurance payouts.
Judge Beresky concluded with a reference to Daybell’s recent biblical allusions, saying, “It will take an act of God for you to go free… You should never be released from prison.”
Her current husband, Chad Daybell—an author of apocalyptic religious fiction—is awaiting trial in Idaho, where he faces the death penalty for his role in the children’s murders and the death of his previous wife.
